Our New 2020 Spring Blend

A coffee of comfort and hope

Blue Bottle 2020 Spring Blend

Think of our new 2020 Spring Blend as the coffee equivalent of wearing a cozy cotton sweater on a cool day while lifting your face to the sun. Even amidst so much uncertainty, we can count on this season to inspire feelings of renewal.

How We Created It

Despite the longer days, there’s still a chill in the air until the Earth goes full tilt on its axis. “To capture that feeling of winter transitioning to summer, we blended a comforting coffee we crave during the cold months with something brighter and full of hope—a mellow, brown-sugar Brazil and a vibrant, floral coffee from Rwanda,” says Blue Bottle green coffee buyer Shaun Puklavetz.

When his team builds coffees inspired by the seasons, he says they look toward coffees with a bit more vibrancy as the days become less cold. “There’s a sensory connection we have between the acidity of coffee and the warming weather,” Shaun says. (Think of how lemonade tastes extra refreshing on a hot summer day but too chilling and unappealing when it snows.) In coffeespeak, we call this acidity “brightness.”

How to Brew It

Like many of our coffees, our Spring Blend tastes wonderful, with a little more snappy tartness and dark earthiness, when brewed hot, as a pour over. (Learn how to make pour over coffee.) It’s also lovely and buoyant with a silkier body and mellower acidity when steeped as a cold brew and chilled. (Learn how to make iced coffee, aka cold brew.)

About Our Seasonal Blend Series

We think of our Seasonal Blends as immersive experiences. To help evoke the feeling of each season, we used the Coffee Taster’s Flavor Wheel, developed by the Specialty Coffee Association and World Coffee Research. This tool links colors to flavors and helps professionals to build a shared lexicon with coffee drinkers everywhere.

Colors like pale yellow, tawny amber, and blush pink allude to Spring Blend’s arc of flavor that begins with notes of wildflower honey and a soothing butter toffee-like sweetness from the Brazil. Its flourish of florality at the end comes thanks to the gorgeous washed Bourbon from Rwanda.
