Our love affair with Los Angeles continues

Our newest cafe lives (somewhat improbably) at the crossroads of LA’s nostalgic automotive history and the contemporary LA metro. But, as Joan Didion said: “You have to pick the places you don’t walk away from.”

An autobody shop turned Datsun dealership, we’re certain the place is haunted by the ghosts of brightly colored Datsun 510 wagons on their way to the Pacific Palisades with surfboards strapped to their roof racks. (At least, we hope so.)

Now, buzzing with galleries, galleys, studios, and stages, the Hayden Tract neighborhood wooed us with its efforts to make this corner of far-flung Los Angeles a friendlier place for bikers and pedestrians.

Our charming 1000-square-foot space was designed by Hiromi Tsuruta (who also designed our Dean Street, Chelsea, Rockefeller Center, and Market Square cafes), and provides just enough room for our La Marzocco Strada EE, a custom drip coffee bar, plenty of assorted pastries, and 100 books to line our walls, currently on offer through a partnership with our neighbors at One Grand.

We’re spotlighting the book selections of Tilda Swinton, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Carrie Brownstein, Bret Easton Ellis, and Gary Shteyngart on our shelves, which include some of our favorite works—Slouching Towards Bethlehem (Joan Didion), The Waves (Virginia Woolf), and Remembrance of Things Past (Marcel Proust).

You can order a drip coffee to go, grab a book, and then head on your way to the buzzing LA metro. Or, stay awhile, taking advantage of your newfound mental space (made possible via the absence of wi-fi) to enjoy an espresso on our cantilevered mezzanine, dreaming of 1960s Los Angeles and sputtering engines on their way to the beach.
